Virtual leadership, also called remote leadership, is much more demanding than on-site leadership. Leaders who have to lead virtually need to completely master new leadership tasks.

The term virtual team refers to groups that work from different locations and collaborate via information technology.

Virtual leadership means that the lead and at least one employee (or the project manager and at least one team member) are physically separated from each other and therefore have to communicate via different channels.

Examples:

  • Phone
  • E-mail
  • Messenger/Chat (WhatsApp, Skype, Slack)
  • Video conferences
  • Shared files
  • Other, specially developed tools

In most cases, the employees or team members are also physically separated from each other.
